Part 1

We begin with the crisis in California where the governor faces a budget shortfall twice as big as projected due to declining tax revenues. Mark Paul, a former deputy treasurer of the State of California and author of “California Crackup: How Reform Broke the Golden State and How to Fix it” joins us to discuss why the legislature can’t raise taxes and further deep cuts are being made at the expense of the poor. mark paul

Part 2

Then we examine the disconnect between the American public, a majority of whom want to cut the military budget, and the Republican Congress who refuse to cut it even though they signed off to automatic cuts. Steven Kull, a political psychologist and the Director of the Program for Public Consultation and a Senior Researcher at the Center for International Security Studies joins us. He has done a survey that finds three quarters of the respondents favor cutting defense as a way to reduce the deficit, including two thirds of Republicans as well as nine out of ten Democrats.

Part 3

Then finally we speak with Roger Lowenstein, the author of “The End of Wall Street”. He is a veteran financial journalist who wrote for the Wall Street Journal for more than a decade and now writes for the New York Times and Smart Money. We will discuss the latest excess on Wall Street and how the Dodd-Frank reforms meant to rein in derivative trading have been watered down since the crash of 2008.

Part 1

We begin with the other face of Facebook and look into how the co-founder of the social network is avoiding 600 million in taxes. Ilyse Hogue, former Senior Advisor to Media Matters and Director of Political Advocacy and Communication at MoveOn.org joins us to discuss this and how the 99% can level the electoral playing field as the 1% pour in millions to buy the 2012 elections.

Part 2

Then we look into increasing political tensions in Spain where youth unemployment is over 50% and mass demonstrations are expected to culminate tomorrow on the one year anniversary of the founding of the “Indignants” movement. Anthony Geist, a professor at the University of Washington who specializes in contemporary literature and culture of Spain joins us to discuss the political mood in a country that might soon join Greece as the next insolvent country in the Eurozone.

Part 3

Then we discuss the economic and political tensions in Spain further with Dr. Louisa-Elena Delgado, a professor of Spanish Studies at the University of Illinois-Urbana. We look into the Spanish national identity that has not been reconciled following the murderous reign of the Franco dictatorship, and the role of the disgraced King and the current conservative government who are imposing austerity while denying historical memory.

Part 1

We begin with the latest scandal on Wall Street, the two to three billion dollar bad bet that JP Morgan Chase made which has forced the CEO Jamie Dimon to admit his previous dismissal of concerns about the bank’s trading practices were “dead wrong”.  Sue Craig, who covered JP Morgan Chase and the other big Wall Street banks for the Wall Street Journal and is now with the New York Times, joins us. susanne craig

Part 2

Then, with Greece in a political crisis and unable to form a government, we examine the possibility of a Greek default and exit from the Euro with Dimitri Papadimitriou, the President of the Levy Economics Institute. We  discuss the growing likelihood of a cascading crisis in the Eurozone with Greece teetering and increasing doubts about the solvency of Spanish banks likely to have an impact on the U.S. elections if the European Central Bank can’t kick the can down the road before November.

Then finally we speak with Dr. Obery Hendricks, a visiting Scholar in Religion and African American Studies at Columbia University and the author of a new book  “The Universe Bends Toward Justice: Radical Reflections on the Bible, the Church and the Body Politic”. We discuss the impact of President Obama’s recent acceptance of same-sex marriage in the Black Church and the broader African-American community.

Then we go to Caracas, Venezuela and speak with Virginia Lopez who covers Latin America and Venezuela for the UK’s Guardian and Sky TV. We discuss the long absence of President Hugo Chavez who is undergoing a third round of cancer treatment in Cuba, and the growing instability in a country beset by prison riots and one of the worst crime rates in the world, which may soon have leadership vacuum without a stable succession that could result in a social explosion.

Part 3

Then finally we speak about the Air Force’s disgraceful handling of the F-22 scandal, with the designer of two of the U.S.’s most successful warplanes the F-16 and the A-10. Pierre Sprey joins us to analyze what is wrong with the half a billion dollar airplane that pilots refuse to fly because of problems with the oxygen supply and toxic poisoning that is debilitating them as well as the F-22’s ground crew.

Then finally we speak with British historian Robert Service, a professor of History at the University of Oxford and a fellow of St Anthony’s College, Oxford. He served as an expert witness in the recent trial between the two Russian oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich and has written about the recent demonstrations in Russia in the New York Times. Robert Service is the author of a new book “Spies and Commissars: The Early Years of the Russian Revolution”.
