Part 1

We begin with the irrational and unwarranted panic generated by prominent ignoramuses like Donald Trump, that treating Americans infected with Ebola on American soil, as opposed to letting them die in Africa, somehow exposes the American people to unnecessary risk. A leading expert on rare and deadly viruses like MERS, SARS, Marburg and Ebola, Dr Ian Lipkin, the director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University, joins us to discuss how these lethal viruses spread and what is done to contain them, as well as addressing the spread of unscientific and anti-intellectual medical disinformation in the country at large that has led to the re-emergence of all but eradicated diseases as a result of parents not immunizing their children based on bogus and discredited theories.

Part 2

Then we get an assessment of the security situation in Afghanistan following the killing of an American general and the wounding of a German general and 14 others by a soldier in the Afghanistan National Army at Afghanistan’s equivalent of West Point. Marvin Weinbaum, who served as an analyst on Pakistan and Afghanistan at the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, joins us to discuss the impending withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces at a time when the result of the recent election to succeed the corrupt and erratic Hamid Karzai is in dispute with no clear way to settle the country’s latest rigged presidential election.

Part 3

Then finally, we examine the Africa summit underway in Washington with Sasha Lezhnev, Associate Director and Senior Policy Analyst at the Enough Project. He is the author of “Crafting Peace: Strategies to Deal With Warlords in Collapsing States” and has an article at The Daily Beast co-authored with John Prendergast, “Obama’s Africa Summit and the New Danger in Congo”. We discuss what it will take to end the most deadly war since World War II in eastern Congo, the need for many corrupt and entrenched African leaders to give up power, accept opposition politics and allowfree elections.

Part 1

We begin with an analysis of the latest military gains by the Islamic State in Iraq who have taken three towns from Kurdish pesh merga fighters and are now threatening the Mosul Dam, the main supplier of water and electricity for Iraq. Nicholas Heras, an analyst with the Jamestown Foundation and a Contributing Editor and Analyst with the international affairs journal Fair Observer, joins us to discuss the surprising success of I.S. attacks in the north that include the capture of another oil field and the brutal sectarian nature of the I.S. fanatics who are executing the minority Yazidi sect and blowing up Shiite shrines.

Part 2

Then with 50 African heads of state meeting in Washington for the first Africa summit in the U.S., we speak with Aniedi Okure, the Executive Director of the Africa Faith and Justice Network, community of advocates for responsible relations with Africa. He joins us to discuss the three day summit and its focus on business opportunities, with a $1 billion package of business deals organized by the Obama Administration, driven largely by the need to play catch-up to the Chinese who have invested hundreds of billions in Africa, as well as the need to build civil society, good governance and fight corruption in Africa.

Part 3

Then finally we speak with Dean Rice, a former congressional policy and legislative aid on energy and national defense and Natalie Manayeva, a research assistant at the University of Tennessee’s Institute for Nuclear Security about their article at CNN, “Is Ukraine About to go Nuclear Again”. We examine the possibility that Ukraine, having given up its weapons to Russia, now needs them to be protected from Russia, and we also look into the role of Belarus, which has good relations with both Ukraine and Russia. But with Belarusians indoctrinated by Russian propaganda while its pro-Russian dictator reconsiders his allegiance to Moscow after witnessing the trampling of Ukrainian sovereignty next door, we will explore that disconnect.

Part 1

We begin with an analysis of President Obama’s national security team as the U.S. faces multiple international crises. David Rothkopf, the CEO and Editor of Foreign Policy magazine and author of the forthcoming book “National Insecurity: American Leadership in an Age of Fear”, joins us to answer criticism that the president is not sufficiently engaged and that he does not have the counsel of seasoned foreign policy professionals as relations with Russia deteriorate to a dangerous level with Putin trapped in a volatile situation in Ukraine where unless there is a diplomatic intervention, the military situation could explode into a wider conflict.

Part 2

Then we examine the military situation between Hamas and Israel as fighting continues with little hope of a diplomatic solution from talks underway in Cairo that Israel in not a party to. Daniel Byman, a professor at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a senior Fellow at the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution and author of “A High Price: The Triumphs and Failures of Israeli Counter-Terrorism”, joins us to discuss the much lower threshold of military success that Hamas has compared to Israel, and that the Palestinian Authority under Mahmoud Abbas is already the biggest loser in the conflict so far.

Part 3

Then finally, with the Congress recessed for the summer break after a last-minute display of legislative dysfunction, we will speak with a veteran House and Senate senior staffer, Mike Lofgren, the author of “The Party is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless and the Middle Class Got Shafted”.  We discuss why political posturing for House Republicans is preferable to legislating, and that as they return to their gerrymandered districts, incumbents are less likely to face the indignation that most Americans feel about our broken government in Washington.

Part 1

We begin with an assessment of the lawsuit against President Obama that the House just voted to proceed on even though the GOP’s charge of executive over-reach concerns the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, a law House Republicans have voted 50 times to repeal. John Woolley, a Professor of Political Science at U.C. Santa Barbara and Gerhard Peters, a Professor of Political Science at Citrus College, both of whom direct the American Presidency Project, join us to discuss the constitutionality of executive orders and how few executive orders President Obama has issued compared to his predecessors.

Part 2

Then we discuss the default by Argentina on its debts that had previously been settled from an earlier default by 93% of Argentina’s creditors. But due to a U.S. Appeals Court ruling in favor of a few speculators known as vulture funds, who bought the debt at pennies on the dollar and insist of full payment, the deal has unraveled and an entire country has been thrown into economic hardship to satisfy the greed of a couple of Wall Street billionaires. Joining us is Mark Weisbrot, the co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, who along with a hundred economists around the world, have sent a letter to the Congress to mitigate the damage to the international financial system by forcing Argentina into a default. He recently wrote an article for the New York Times, "The Supreme Court Declines to Review Widely Opposed Ruling on Argentine Debt: Why?"

Part 3

Then finally we go to Caracas, Venezuela to speak with Virginia Lopez who covers Latin America and Venezuela for the U.K. Guardian, and discuss the sanctions by the U.S. State Department against 24 high- ranking Venezuelan officials, ostensibly for suppressing anti-government protests that took place months ago. We discuss the more likely prospect that the sanctions are in response to the hero’s welcome afforded a Venezuelan general accused of drug trafficking who the U.S. hoped to extradite from Aruba, until Dutch authorities allowed him to return to Venezuela because of diplomatic immunity.

Part 3

Then finally we examine the efforts by Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Texas Congressman Pete Sessions to scuttle House Speaker Boehner’s immigration bill in the last days before Congress adjourns for the summer recess. Wayne Slater, the Senior Political Writer for the Dallas Morning News, joins us to discuss the political posturing of Texas Governor Rick Perry and junior Senator Ted Cruz, both of whom are running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, and are trying to get the attention of Christian conservative voters who dominate the Republican primary process.
